Eating on Campus

The most common place to eat on campus is obviously the Mensa (University Cafeteria). You don't pay with cash though you pay using the Universitycard, which has credit on it. You can put credit on it by paying money into one of the machines on the wall at the entrance to the Mensa (notes of 5 or 10 euro are accepted only). Mensa cards are provided by the MPI-INF when storing a 20 euro deposit.
When you come into the Mensa, the menu for the day is displayed on large monitors. You choose what you want and go up whichever stairs your food is served at (there are sections with each stairway marked accordingly:
- Wahlessen where you can choose between several dishes,
- Alternative with mostly vegetarian food and
- Standard
You can get a three-course lunch for very little money (if you are a student for 1.78 euro!). There is a wide choice of meals and the Mensa caters for vegetarians, too. In the section where you just pick what food you want dish for dish (``Wahlessen''), it tends to become more expensive.
Opening times for lunch are 11:30 - 13:45. There is also a Mensa cafe downstairs in the Mensa which serves breakfast (from 7 a.m. - 10 a.m.) and dinner from 17:00 - 20:00 but only during the semester course.
You can also eat in the "AC" (Ausländer Cafe Bistro).
There is also a nice coffee bar next to the MPI-INF building which also offers snacks.
