Iman Alipour is a PhD candidate at Max Planck Institute for Informatics, the Internet Architecture group. He earned his Bachelors in Computer Engineering from Sharif University of Technology in 2024. During his Bachelors, Iman explored different fields in Computer science such as Machine Learning, Systems, Security, Human-Computer Interaction, Cyber-Physical systems, and IoT.
Iman's bachelor thesis investigated a novel method for client selection in federated learning such that various factors were optimized using a reinforcement learning reward function such that a balance between overall model accuracy, efficiency, and fairness would be guaranteed. The reward function also considered end-user data quality and aimed to optimize energy consumption.
Iman lead a research project as a bachelor student titled "Security and Privacy Perceptions Toward Messaging Platforms in Iran" which was the highlight of his bachelors. This research project investigated whether or not Iranians trust Iranian messaging platforms, and if not, what the root causes are. They then made several suggestions to the stake-holders of such platforms to build trust with Iranian users, and compared and contrasted the main differences Iranian and non-Iranian messaging platforms have with one another.
Iman now focuses on how emerging and existing technologies impact humans' privacy and threaten their security. He hopes to introduce new methods in order for end-users with little to no knowledge to better-protect themselves when interacting with the Internet and such technologies on a daily basis.
In his free time, Iman enjoys listening to music, plays CTFs, reads NEWS, and loves to be active by always moving around! He enjoys playing sports no matter what they, are and is open to new adventures. Iman also enjoys hiking, sight-seeing, camping, experimenting with coffee, and cooking! He also has an interest in board games. His other hobbies include fiddling with electronics and trying to make every-day tools smart and long-distance controllable using micro-controllers, and various sensors and actuators. Other than that he enjoys reading books and getting lost in math and physics equations.
